What Is an AI Material Selection System? Why Building-Material Brands Need Their Own

An AI material selection system is a tool a building-material brand puts on its website and gives to its sales reps: a customer uploads a photo of their own room, the system places the brand's real products in it at their true size, pattern and finish, and the customer can go straight to the brand's store or rep.

In English it is usually called a room visualizer or material visualizer. It answers one question: "What will this exact product look like in my home?" For a brand, that is the moment a customer is closest to deciding — and most likely to get stuck.

What makes a tool an AI material selection system?

Three things:

  • Real product data: the tile, floor or paint on screen is the actual product from the brand's catalog, not something an AI drew to look similar.
  • True size and finish: tile is laid at its real dimensions and patterns follow how the product ships; gloss, matte and pearl look different, and the rest of the room stays untouched.
  • A path back to the brand: when the customer is interested, the next step is your store or rep — not another search.

That is also what separates it from AI interior-design apps, which invent a style; the materials in those images are drawn by the AI and may not exist. For a side-by-side test, see ChatGPT and Gemini vs a material visualizer.

The wall on the right is KEIM mineral paint in 9348, a yellow-leaning green with a mineral matte finish. It's the actual product in the brand's catalog, not something an AI drew to look similar.

What else gets called "AI material selection"?

In Taiwan, where RoomDreaming started, the term is new, and at least three different things go by it:

  • Putting a product into your photo: the customer uploads a room photo and swaps in one product. This is the AI material selection system this article is about.
  • Matching and recommending materials: you describe the space and the style, and the system suggests suitable materials — but doesn't show them in your photo.
  • Material databases with design plugins: designers look up specs and prices, then draw materials into their plans with a CAD plugin.

All three are useful; they just solve different problems. Only the first lets a customer see your product in their own home.

Why does a brand need its own?

Being on a marketplace helps customers find you. But once a customer is on your website, in your showroom, or holding a link from your rep, they need a different tool:

  • Only your products: your brand on the screen, and nobody else's catalog.
  • Your data: color references, sizes and patterns come from you, and you decide when new products go live and discontinued ones come off.
  • A clear next step: interested customers go straight to the store or rep who covers their area.
  • One tool everywhere: your website, reps' links, and QR codes in the showroom and printed catalog all open the same catalog.

What does onboarding take, and how does RoomDreaming do it?

A material selection system is only as accurate as the product data behind it. For tile, prepare sizes, pattern images or face variations, how it ships (random shipping / mixed faces, or vein matching), recommended layouts, grout width and color, and finish. For art paint, prepare physical sample boards. Wood flooring can go live within a month; art paint takes more than a month, because every board is high-resolution scanned and color-calibrated to the real color reference.

RoomDreaming is an AI material selection system built for building-material brands. It carries 8,000+ building materials across art paint, wood flooring, tile and more, all real products the brands sell. In Taiwan, decorative paint brands LUXUS PAINT, San Marco, Atarashi and KEIM run it on their own websites, and flooring brand Crown Tai has its own visualizer page. From San Marco's MARCOPOLO LUXURY — a sand-textured metallic paint brushed on by hand in a cloud pattern — to KEIM's mineral matte, customers can see the difference on a photo of their own home.

  • Finish you can see: AI photorealistic rendering shows gloss, matte and pearl reflections — not a flat overlay.
  • Laid by the product data: tile at its real size, with layouts and grout colors you can switch, and vein matching (sequential layout) for large-format slabs.
  • Free for customers, no sign-up: it opens on a phone, and quote requests suggest the nearest store and notify it on LINE, Taiwan's default messaging app.

FAQ

What is an AI material selection system?

It is a tool provided by a building-material brand: customers upload a photo of their own room, and the system places the brand's real products in it at their true size, pattern and finish, so the customer can go straight to the brand's store or rep.

My products are already on a marketplace. Do I still need my own system?

A marketplace helps more people find you; your own system helps you close the customers who are already interested. On your website, in your showroom or with your rep, they need to see only your products, from your own data, and come back to your sales team.

What does a brand need to prepare?

For tile: sizes, pattern images or face variations, how it ships, recommended layouts, grout width and color, and finish. For art paint: physical sample boards. Wood flooring can go live within a month; art paint takes more than a month because every board is scanned and color-calibrated.
